Back in 1997 I had 3 kids 3 and under. I was a happy busy 27 year old mom. My kids were my life.
I can't remember exactly who told me about the West Coast Trail, but I fell in love with it.
Ed and I talked about hiking it, but with 3 babies, saving for a home, busy church callings and basically life in general, we just didn't have time. A few years later, I met someone from B.C. who told me more about the WCT. She led me to read several excellent books about it.
Fast forward a few more years and bring on the internet. I had a couple friends who wanted to hike it and we planned to do it, but it never happened. The internet allowed me to research it more fully and I was more in love than ever.
We now had 5 kids and all the craziness that that entailed. I never lost my desire to hike this trail, but my husband did. Sadly, his knees didn't like to go downhill anymore. I pretty much gave up on our (my) dream. Then my brother-in-law got it into his head to do it. He booked 6 spots on the trail for summer 2017. 20 years after I first heard about it, the chance to actually do it became a reality. Not a day goes by that I don't wish Ed and I were doing this together. But never one to hold me back, he is bankrolling this grand adventure and I love him for it.
Our group consists of Jeremy and his wife Julie and their daughter Mckinley, Darren and his wife Susan, and myself. It's gonna be epic.
My son Austen doesn't think I can do this hard of a hike. He says, "You'll die trying to do it." Maybe I'll prove him wrong.
Or maybe Ed will bring a date to my funeral...
This is my story of my West Coast Trail adventure. I've been running and hiking to build endurance and planking and doing push-ups to strengthen my core.
I am so excited for this adventure.
